Surah 86: The Morning StarThe Morning Star

سُورَةُ الطَّارِقِ

If you don’t know me, my name is RachelJewish, and these are my scripture notes on the Quran. The ayat are presented sequentially in English and Arabic, followed by my commentary. Think of it as a living midrash: whenever I learn something new, I add a note. My notes draw from an eclectic range of ancient sources, both Jewish and Gentile. See my about page for more.

I’ve used Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall’sMuslim (Sunni) 1930 translation of the Quran’s meanings since it’s both public domain and very pretty.

Surah 86: The Morning Star, The Nightcomerسُورَةُ الطَّارِقِ

1By the heaven and the Morning Star 2- Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is! 3- The piercing Star! 4No human soul but hath a guardian over it. 5So let man consider from what he is created. 6He is created from a gushing fluid 7That issued from between the loins and ribs. 8Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life) 9On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out. 10Then will he have no might nor any helper. 11By the heaven which giveth the returning rain, 12And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants) 13Lo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word, 14It is no pleasantry. 15Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad) 16And I plot a plot (against them). 17So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.
